Vineyard and terroir
Sezzana is the estate's most historic Tuscan vineyard and marked the beginning of its venture in Tuscany in 2001. Located in Casciana Terme in the province of Pisa, the approximately 2.02 ha vineyard faces south-west at 160 m a.s.l. Its Sangiovese vines average 30 years of age. Rocky soil with a pronounced presence of travertine contributes to a forceful, immediately expressive wine with notable longevity.
Grapes
100% Sangiovese. Sezzana is made only in the best vintages.
Vinification
Maceration and alcoholic fermentation take place in temperature-controlled vats for an average of 14–15 days. Malolactic fermentation occurs in French oak barrels, of which 20% are new and the remainder used, second-passage oak.
Ageing
The wine matures for 24 months in French oak barrels, with 20% new oak and the balance in used, second-passage barrels. It then ages in bottle for at least 100 months, bringing the total cellar maturation to more than 12 years.
Technical data
Average production is 6,000 bottles. The first vintage was 2001.
Tasting profile
The nose combines violet and ripe cherry with leather and sweet spices. The palate is well structured, with soft, persuasive tannins and a persistent finish.
