Vineyard and terroir
The vineyards are situated at 340 m with southeastern exposure. Montepulciano vines are trained in the traditional Abruzzo pergola system. The soils are deep, richly textured clay, and the yield is 8 t/ha.
Grapes
100% Montepulciano.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested by hand in the second half of October and carefully selected. An initial cold pre-fermentation maceration lasts eight days at 7°C. Fermentation then proceeds at 30°C in 50-hl vats, with frequent pump-overs and délestage, followed by skin maceration lasting more than 40 days. Malolactic fermentation occurs during maceration on the skins.
Ageing
The wine spends its first 12 months sur lie in oak barrels and the following 6 months in vats. Bottle maturation exceeds 15 months.
