Vineyard and terroir

The grapes come from the historic, estate-owned San Clemente single vineyard in the Casauria Valley. Its medium-textured soils tend toward clay and face south. Constant year-round ventilation and pronounced day-to-night temperature shifts shape the valley’s growing conditions. The vines are trained to pergola and espalier. Pruning limits production per plant, integrated pest management is practised, and the vineyard follows the Sustainable Viticulture Project guidelines.

Grapes

Montepulciano d’Abruzzo.

Vinification

The freshly harvested grapes are destemmed and crushed. Fermentation and maceration last 15–20 days in 50 hL oak vats at 28–30°C. The wine is then racked, and the liquid fraction settles for 48 hours.

Ageing

Total maturation lasts 18 months, including nine months in barriques.

Technical data

Alcohol: 14.5% vol, with possible variation between vintages. Available formats: 0.75 L, 1.5 L, 3 L and 6 L. Harvesting is by hand, normally during the second ten days of October.

Tasting profile

Deep red with violet reflections. Rose and blueberry jam lead an expansive bouquet, followed by liquorice, cumin, white pepper and graphite. The palate is imposing, textural and voluminous, yet remains dynamic through dense, vital tannins and vibrant freshness.

Serving and pairing

Serve at 16–18°C in a balloon glass. Pair with deeply flavoured dishes such as pasta with rich meat ragù, mushroom risotto, substantial red meats and game.

Label / history

The San Clemente name honours the Abbey of San Clemente a Casauria, an Italian national monument since 1894. In 872 the abbey received the relics of Pope Clement I, whose image appears on the label. This Riserva is presented as a long-lived expression of Montepulciano capable of evolving over decades.
