Vineyard and terroir
The grapes come from vineyards in the municipalities of Spoltore, San Valentino and Scafa, at 150–400 m above sea level. Exposures are south and southwest, and the soils are clay. The vines are 26 to 46 years old.
Vinification
Harvest is by hand from the first week of October. Fermentation and skin contact last three weeks in upright stainless steel tanks. The wine is then moved to a combination of 25 hl oak casks, barriques and tonneaux, both new and second-fill. Spontaneous malolactic fermentation takes place there.
Ageing
Ageing lasts 16 months in the mixed oak vessels, and the final stage is in 25 hl oak casks. After bottling the wine matures for another year in the winery's cellars.
Vintage notes
2019: The winter was mild and dry, followed by a very cold spring and a rainy May. The rain replenished the soils, which matters in Abruzzo, where vines are mainly grown without irrigation. Summer, especially July, was very warm, but enough rain fell to support healthy berry growth and make up for the ripening delay caused by the cool May. September brought bright, sunny days and moderate temperatures. Early-ripening varieties were harvested, while late-ripening Montepulciano had time to reach a balance of acidity, sugar and phenolics. Yields were significantly lower than the previous year, and grape quality was excellent.
