Vineyard and terroir

The production area is Montepulciano, specifically the hills around Acquaviva di Montepulciano. The Antica Chiusina vineyard is still crossed by the old Etruscan road that linked Montepulciano and Chiusi, two important cities of ancient Etruria.

Grapes

Sangiovese with other traditional grape varieties; exact proportions are not specified.

Vinification

The grapes are picked by hand into 20 kg crates. Fermentation and maceration take place at a controlled 24–28°C, with daily pumping over and délestage. After alcoholic fermentation, post-fermentation maceration continues at 29°C.

Ageing

After racking, the wine is transferred to oak and matured for at least 18 months.

Tasting profile

Ruby red with a lightly garnet rim. The aromas open with ripe plum and sour cherry, developing notes of cinnamon, resin, tobacco and clove alongside mineral nuances and red and dark berries. The palate is complex, warm, full-bodied, elegant and powerful, with a dense tannic weave and a persistent finish.

Serving and pairing

Suitable for roasted red meats, roast game and stewed beef; wild-boar stew is a particularly apt pairing.

Label / history

Antica Chiusina is produced only in years when the conditions and grape ripening are considered exceptional. Its identity is closely tied both to Fattoria del Cerro and to the history of the Vino Nobile denomination. The name comes from the Antica Chiusina vineyard and its surviving Etruscan route.
