Questo vino
Technical data
A fortified dessert wine with 16% alcohol by volume and 8% residual sugar. It has a deep golden colour with pronounced amber reflections. Formats comprise 375 ml and 750 ml Bordeaux bottles and 100 ml, 250 ml and 500 ml fiaschi; packaging options are 12, 24 or 52 bottles.
Tasting profile
Its elevated sweetness relative to Vin Santo Toscano gives a soft, sweet profile without excess. The aroma is intense and persistent, with almond, hazelnut and cocoa. Warm and velvety on the palate, it combines integrated sweet sensations with balance and avoids a cloying finish. Flavour persistence is good.
Serving and pairing
Serve cool but not ice-cold at 10–12°C. Pair with biscuits, dry pastries and cakes. Almond cantuccini are the preferred match and may be dipped into the wine to soften them and accentuate their flavour.
Label / history
Several traditions explain the word “Santo.” One attributes it to a Franciscan friar who, around 1350, treated plague victims with wine normally used for Mass, leading to belief in its miraculous qualities. Another associates it with the Council of Florence in 1439 and an exclamation concerning wine from Xantos, later interpreted as “santos.” A third explanation links the name more directly to the wine's use during Holy Mass.
