Vineyard and terroir
Rosso di Montalcino DOC comes from Vigna Colombaio, a 1.5 ha vineyard planted in 2003. It lies between Montalcino and the hills of Val d’Orcia, within a natural amphitheatre overlooking the Asso valley at approximately 300 m above sea level. The site faces south and has sodium-rich calcareous-clay soil. The vines are Guyot-trained.
The vineyard is managed under certified organic farming. Organic fertiliser and green manure are used; the soil is hoed twice yearly, while vineyard treatments are limited to copper and sulphur. Pronounced summer temperature variation characterises the local microclimate.
