Vineyard and terroir
The grapes grow on carefully selected, well-exposed plots with sandy soils in the hills of San Gimignano, at 250 m. The area lies between Siena, Pisa and Florence. The estate owns 145 ha of vineyards in total, stretching from the heart of Chianti Classico to the historic part of San Gimignano.
Vinification
Harvest takes place in the last 10 days of September, at optimal ripeness, with close attention to the balance between acidity and sweetness. After gentle pressing, the must is vinified by traditional methods. Fermentation takes place in neutral vessels at a controlled 15–17 °C, with selected yeasts added to bring out the aroma of the variety. Vernaccia is made at the San Gimignano estate.
Ageing
The wine is not aged.
Tasting profile
Light and refreshing, a dry white of high quality, made for everyday enjoyment.
Label / history
Vernaccia di San Gimignano was the first Italian wine to receive DOC classification and now holds DOCG status. The estate takes its name from an old Florentine family. Its winemaking history goes back to the XV century, when Antonio Serristori, a senator of the Republic of Florence, married the heiress of Niccolò Machiavelli and received as her dowry a farm with vineyards and olive groves in Sant'Andrea in Percussina. Conti Serristori is part of GRUPPO ITALIANO VINI (Italian Wine Group). Chianti and the estate's other Tuscan wines are vinified and aged mainly in its principal cellar.
