Vineyard and terroir

Anacoreta comes from the Stracacio vineyard in Contrada Spescia, Cupramontana. The site is at 250 m, faces west and is composed predominantly of calcareous marl. The vines were planted in 2003.

Spontaneous ground cover is maintained without fertilisation. The vines are pruned manually to single and double Guyot, with manual and mechanical under-row management.

Grapes

Verdicchio. The exact percentage is not specified.

Vinification

The grapes are destemmed and crushed into tank, where the must ferments in contact with the skins for seven days. After separation from the skins, fermentation is completed in French-oak tonneaux. Of the three tonneaux made in 2017, two shared similar alcohol and flavour profiles, while the third was markedly different. That single distinctive tonneau was bottled separately as Anacoreta without blending.

Ageing

Twenty-four months in French-oak tonneau.

Technical data

Production: 908 bottles of 500 ml. Ageing potential: 10 years or more.

Tasting profile

The nose shows resinous pine, walnut shell and balsamic eucalyptus-bark notes. The palate opens with considerable weight, repeating walnut and almond before developing candied fruit, apricot, peach skin and liquorice stick. It finishes clean and invites another sip. Extended ageing has given further dimension to an already opulent wine.

Serving and pairing

Conceived to be enjoyed by itself rather than accompanied by food.

Vintage notes

Anacoreta was produced only in 2017. It arose unexpectedly during the barrel fermentation of must otherwise destined for Stragaio, expressing the cellar philosophy of bottling what each vintage reveals.

Label / history

The name contrasts with Cenobita: Anacoreta arrived first, although Cenobita later became its conceptual counterpart.
