Vineyard and terroir
Il Bacco is a considered blend of wines from several estate vineyards at 250–350 m above sea level, with northwest, northeast and southeast exposures. The soils are predominantly clay and contain little coarse skeletal material. The component vineyards were planted in 1975, 1976, 1979, 1990, 1991, 2013 and 2017.
Apart from closer under-row care for young vines, the established vineyards have received neither fertiliser since 1993 nor soil cultivation. They maintain spontaneous ground cover, require minimal under-row intervention and are pruned manually to single or double Guyot.
Grapes
Verdicchio; the percentage is not specified.
Vinification
Gentle crushing is followed by static settling or flotation of the must. The blend principally uses the second portion of the pressing, kept separate from the free-run must. Fermentation is spontaneous, driven by indigenous yeasts in stainless steel and concrete.
Ageing
The component wines mature in stainless-steel and concrete tanks on their fine lees until blending. The final blend is decided after approximately one year, with each lot kept in its original vessel to preserve the wine's substantial, generous palate. A measured proportion of press wine is deliberately included to draw greater substance and character from Verdicchio.
Tasting profile
The nose presents broad, rich notes interwoven with the white-flower character of a youthful Verdicchio. The palate is lively and pleasantly rounded, offset by herbal nuances, before a long, lightly almond-toned finish. It has powerful structure and a firm palate-filling core while remaining relaxed and approachable.
Serving and pairing
Designed for a wide variety of meals. Its robustness suits structured first courses and savoury main dishes. Ageing potential is 4–6 years. Available in 750 ml bottles.
Label / history
Presented as a friendly, straightforward and generous wine assembled by finding complementary lots from different vineyards. The label gallery records designs from 2005, 2003, 2001 and 1993.
