Vineyard and terroir
The fruit comes from the estate’s oldest single vineyard, on the slopes of the extinct volcano Vulture. Since 1998, Cantine del Notaio has farmed its family vineyards according to biodynamic principles. The estate’s 26 ha of vineyards are divided among five plots with different soil types.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested by hand from the final week of November through the first week of December, when the ripe berries begin to shrivel slightly in the cold. This late harvest is presented as a modern interpretation of the Aglianico style. Maceration lasts 30 days, with the aim of extracting the generous tannins from the fully ripe fruit.
Ageing
The wine matures in natural volcanic-tuff caves formerly belonging to Franciscan monks: 24 months in French oak barrels followed by 24 months in bottle.
Tasting profile
The 2006 vintage has an aristocratic character and an elegant, rich palate.
Label / history
The name refers to the Italian word sigillo, meaning “seal,” and to the seal used to certify the wine’s quality. The 2006 vintage received a gold medal at the 2010 Concorso mondiale di Bruxelles and silver medals at the 2010 International Wine & Spirits competition in London and the 2010 Biodivino: i vini da agricoltura biologica.
