Vineyard and terroir

Rotondo is a cru from the Villa Rotondo vineyard in Contrada Rotondo, within the district of Barile. Historically, this has been one of the area’s most sought-after sites for Aglianico. The old, Guyot-trained vines grow at 500 metres above sea level and give exceptionally low yields. Paternoster’s vineyards occupy black volcanic soils on the slopes overlooking Monte Vulture and are certified organic.

Grapes

100% Aglianico del Vulture.

Vinification

The grapes are harvested by hand into small crates and destemmed before classic red fermentation. Maceration takes place in stainless steel for 15 days at 25–28°C, with periodic pump-overs and punch-downs. Malolactic fermentation follows.

Ageing

The wine matures for 14 months in new French barriques, followed by 12 months in bottle.

Technical data

Alcohol: 14% vol. Bottle size: 750 ml.

Tasting profile

Bright ruby red with luminous purple highlights. Fruit and spice shape the aroma, joined by a hint of liquorice. The palate is juicy and concentrated, showing raspberry preserve and a rounded, persistent finish.

Serving and pairing

Serve at 16–18°C in a large glass. It can accompany a whole meal and is particularly suited to pasta with meat ragù, roast lamb, red-meat roasts and mature cheeses.

Vintage notes

The 2015 growing season was notably hot and dry. High temperatures in July and August limited disease pressure. Warmer-than-average conditions in mid-September brought harvest forward by approximately one week, while substantial day-to-night temperature differences supported complete, even ripening. The resulting wines were powerful, warm, elegant and long-lived.
