Vineyard and terroir

De Coronis is produced solely from the De Coronis vineyard at Podere Corone, a plot identified in historical records as Villa de Coronis. Curving vine rows and century-old oak trees form part of the site. The vineyard occupies south- to southwest-facing hillsides at 320 m above sea level, with medium-textured soil rich in seashells. The vines are trained to spurred cordon with 6–8 buds and yields are limited to 5,000 kg/ha.

Grapes

100% Merlot. The grapes are picked by hand from early to mid-September.

Vinification

Fermentation takes place in stainless-steel vats at 25–28°C, followed by 15–18 days of maceration.

Ageing

The wine matures for 16 months in 500-litre French oak casks, followed by 7–9 months in bottle in thermoregulated cellars at 15–16°C.

Technical data

The 2020 wine has 14% alcohol. De Coronis is made only after an excellent harvest and released in very limited quantities.

Tasting profile

Deep ruby red. Violet and tobacco lead the bouquet, joined by dark-fleshed fruit and sweet liquorice. The palate is fresh, round and enveloping, with soft tannins, ripe plum and black cherry, followed by delicate dark-spice and black-pepper notes. The finish is balanced and persistent.

Serving and pairing

Pair with rich juicy dishes, wild-boar stew, game or aged cheeses.

Label / history

The name derives from Villa de Coronis, the historical name recorded for the vineyard parcel.
