Vineyard and terroir

The vineyards lie at 300–420 metres above sea level, with southern and south-western exposures. Their soils consist of clay, marl and limestone, and the vines average around 30 years of age. Villa Dievole is near Vagliagli in the Chianti Classico area, about 12 km north-east of Siena and 56 km south-east of Florence. The estate has 150 hectares of plantings divided among 16 vineyards, each with its own microclimate.

Vinification

The grapes are harvested by hand in mid-October and sorted before being chilled to 10 °C. Fermentation takes place at a controlled temperature of 16 °C.

Ageing

The wine matures in stainless-steel tanks for approximately 10 months, followed by two months in bottle.

Label / history

The name Dievole is thought to derive from “Dio vuole,” meaning “God wills.” Villa Dievole was built in the eleventh century as the residence of a noble Tuscan family, when the Dieulele vineyard was planted there under divine protection. Fifteen generations of owners have since made wine on the estate. Mario di Dievole became director of the family company in 1986, aged 21.
