Vineyard and terroir

The grapes are organically grown in Tuscany at 250 metres above sea level. The vines stand on sandy, gravelly soils rich in organic matter and average 14 years of age. Yields do not exceed 80 quintals per hectare.

Vinification

Harvest takes place in early September. The grapes are destemmed, immediately chilled to 5 °C and gently pressed. The must is chilled again to 5 °C and left to settle for 2 days. Fermentation lasts around 35 days at a controlled 17–18 °C.

Ageing

3 months in steel tanks.

Tasting profile

Fresh and fruity.

Serving and pairing

Suited to a summer aperitif.

Vintage notes

2020: the growing season in Tuscany was unusually warm and dry. A mild winter was followed by a spring of sunny days and light showers. The hot, dry summer brought the grapes quickly to phenolic ripeness. Cool nights preserved the acidity and the bright aromatic character of the grapes. The harvest took place in good weather.

Label / history

The Dievole estate lies in the Chianti Classico region, about 12 km northeast of Siena, 56 km southeast of Florence and 1 km from the village of Vagliagli. Its more than 400 hectares include woodland, vineyard-covered hills, olive groves and traditional Chianti farms; 150 hectares are planted, divided into 16 individual vineyards, each with its own microclimate. The name Dievole is thought to derive from "Dio vuole" ("God wills it"). Villa Dievole was built as the residence of a noble Tuscan family as far back as the eleventh century, when the Dieulele vineyard was planted in the area. Fifteen generations of owners have made wine here. Mario di Dievole became director of the family company in 1986, at 21, and the first Dievole Chianti Classico was released in 1989. Besides Chianti, the estate makes young white, rosé and red wines and several "Super-Tuscans". Dievole belongs to Alejandro Bulgheroni Family Vineyards (also called Societa Agricola Dievole Spa), the group of Alejandro Pedro Bulgheroni, which also owns wineries in Argentina, Uruguay and California.
