Vineyard and terroir

The grapes are grown organically on the Tuscan coast at 50 metres above sea level, in sandy, stony soils. Tenuta Le Colonne lies in Bolgheri, in a coastal setting beside the sea. Sea breezes and volcanic soils are said in the text to give well-balanced wines with a distinctive character and a genuine expression of terroir.

Vinification

Each variety is harvested when it reaches optimal ripeness. Fermentation is spontaneous, with native yeasts, in truncated-cone concrete vats at a controlled temperature of around 28 °C and lasts about 15 days.

Ageing

The wine ages for 12 months in large oak barrels, then a further 3 months in bottle.

Tasting profile

A rich, dry red.

Label / history

Plenum is made at Tenuta Le Colonne in Bolgheri, part of the Alejandro Bulgheroni Family Vineyards (ABFV) group, also known as Societa Agricola Dievole Spa. The group's philosophy centres on top quality, sustainability and minimal environmental impact. Its owner, Alejandro Pedro Bulgheroni, also owns wineries in Argentina, Uruguay and California.

The Dievole estate lies in the heart of the Chianti Classico region, about 12 km northeast of Siena, 56 km southeast of Florence and 1 km from the village of Vagliagli. It covers more than 400 hectares of woodland, vineyard-covered hills, olive groves and traditional Chianti farms. Its vineyards cover 150 hectares, divided into 16 sites, each with its own microclimate. Villa Dievole was built in the eleventh century as the residence of a noble Tuscan family; its name is thought to derive from "Dio vuole" ("God wills"). Fifteen generations of owners have made wine here. Mario di Dievole became director of the family business in 1986, at 21, and the first Dievole Chianti Classico was released in 1989. Besides Chianti, the estate produces young white, rosé and red wines and some Super-Tuscans.
