Label / history
The wine is named after the siren Lighea, drawn on the label by illustrator Stefano Vitale. Gabriella Rallo, for whom labels express emotions and tell the stories behind the wines, took her inspiration from Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa's novel. In it the siren Lighea has tousled, sun-coloured hair and seawater running over her wide-open green eyes. The Rallo family archive holds many sketches made before the final label was chosen.
Donnafugata means "woman in flight" in Italian. The name is tied to a legend about Queen Maria Carolina, who fled Naples and found refuge in a town in the heart of the Santa Margherita Belice valley, in a palace beneath the stars. For this reason many Donnafugata labels show a woman's head with hair flowing in the wind.
The Rallo family produced wine in Sicily for 150 years before creating Donnafugata as a more modern company. During harvest the winery holds a nighttime music festival in the vineyards. It uses solar panels to turn sunlight into electricity.
