Vineyard and terroir
Nero d'Avola ripens easily and well in southwestern Sicily, which gives the wine its fruity aroma. Most of Donnafugata's vineyards are in southeastern Sicily, in the Contessa Entellina area.
Grapes
The first vintages were made from two varieties, Nero d'Avola and Syrah. Since 2009 the wine has been made entirely from Nero d'Avola.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested by hand. Donnafugata picks its grapes at night.
Ageing
After vinification the wine spends 4 months in stainless steel tanks and at least 8 months in bottle.
Tasting profile
A charming, lively, light and appealing Nero d'Avola with a fruity aroma, in a modern style. It carries the warmth of Sicily.
Label / history
Sherazade has been produced since 2006. It is named after Scheherazade, the young heroine of "One Thousand and One Nights", whose voice brought the king a new story every evening.
The name Donnafugata means "woman in flight". According to legend, Queen Maria Carolina fled Naples and found refuge in a town in the heart of the Santa Margherita Belice valley, in a palace beneath the stars. The story inspired the image of a woman's head with hair blowing in the wind, which appears on many Donnafugata labels.
The Rallo family has been making wine in Sicily for 150 years. Donnafugata was created on that tradition as a more modern winery. During the harvest it holds a nighttime music festival in the vineyards, and the winery uses solar panels to generate electricity.
