Vineyard and terroir

The 5.5-hectare Nerello Mascalese vineyard lies at Tenuta Vajasindi in the Piano dei Daini area of Solicchiata, on the northern side of Mount Etna, at 622–652 m above sea level. The sandy soil derives from lava eruptions and has neutral pH, little active limestone and good organic content. Vines are vertically trellised and spur-cordon pruned. Average yield is 60–70 q/ha, or approximately 1.5 kg of grapes per vine.

Grapes

Nerello Mascalese.

Vinification

The crates are unloaded manually and the bunches destemmed. Inside a soft press, the must macerates with the skins long enough to extract a delicate blush-pink color. After fermentation, the wine remains in contact with its own yeasts for at least four months before bottling.

Ageing

At least four months on its own yeasts before bottling.

Technical data

The technical sheet gives 13.0% alcohol, total acidity of 6.30 g/L and pH 3.21; the wine page instead gives 12.5% alcohol. Available formats are 75 cl and 150 cl. Recommended serving temperature is 6–8 °C. Under suitable conditions, the wine can age for up to four years.

Tasting profile

Delicate dusty pink. Aromas of wild strawberry, exotic fruit and citrus are complemented by violet. The palate is enveloping, fresh and savory, with the territorial tang associated with Etna.

Serving and pairing

Serve at 6–8 °C with raw fish, medium-aged cheeses, white meats or legume soups.

Vintage notes

The 2024 season combined moderately rainy autumn and winter weather with a dry spring and a hot summer punctuated by rare but intense rainfall. Nerello Mascalese picking began on 23 September after full ripening. Manual harvesting and selection of bunches on the vine preserved the fruit’s integrity. This was the first vintage produced.
