Vineyard and terroir

Triskelè comes from 5.8 ha at Tenuta di Suor Marchesa near Riesi and Butera in south-central Sicily. The vineyard was planted in 1997 on hilly terrain at 340–350 m above sea level. Predominantly clay soils have a subalkaline reaction and a high level of active limestone. Planting density is approximately 6,400 vines per hectare, with yields around 50–60 quintals per hectare. The vines are espalier-trained and Guyot-pruned.

Grapes

100% Nero d’Avola.

Vinification

Clusters are selected at the winery and destemmed. Alcoholic fermentation and skin maceration proceed together at 26–28 °C. After fermentation, the wine remains on the skins for a further week. Malolactic fermentation follows in concrete tanks after racking.

Ageing

The wine matures for 10–12 months in new and second-use oak barriques, followed by at least one year in bottle before release.

Technical data

The 2021 has 14.5% alcohol, total acidity of 6.6 g/L and pH 3.37. The bottle format is 75 cl. Under suitable conditions, the wine can mature for up to 20 years.

Tasting profile

Deep red with violet-purple reflections. The nose combines sour or black cherry, blackberry and spice. The palate is soft and enveloping, with smooth tannins and a long, pleasant finish.

Serving and pairing

Serve at 14–16 °C. Pair with grilled or braised red meat, game, and medium-aged or mature cheeses.

Vintage notes

The 2021 season was warmer than average. Winter was rainy, while spring and summer were very dry; the intense heat of early summer eased toward the end of the season. Grapes were harvested manually into 3 kg crates from the final week of September through the first week of October.

Label / history

The label reproduces Emilio Murdolo’s 1965 oil painting of Villa Valguarnera, the Alliata family’s summer residence and the place where Giuseppe Alliata, Duca di Salaparuta, made his first wine. The image was chosen for the estate’s 200th anniversary as the identity of a new expression of Nero d’Avola. The first Triskelè vintage was produced in 1998.
