Vineyard and terroir
The Via Nuova vineyard forms part of the larger Terlo hill and lies at 350–400 m above sea level. Its predominantly clay soils contain layers of marl and sandstone. The planting pattern and local microclimate give the grapes a distinctive aroma. The vineyard is managed using integrated pest management and biological practices, with close attention to environmental protection.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested at full ripeness, then selected and sorted.
Ageing
The wine requires additional time to reach full maturity and is released only after extended bottle ageing.
Tasting profile
Elegant and refined, with aromas of dark red cherry, dried flowers, citrus and warm spices. Lively acidity provides balance. The palate is balanced, layered and persistent.
Label / history
The Pira family appears in parish records dating to the seventeenth century and began making wine under its own name at the end of the nineteenth century. Traditional winemaker Gigi Pira used grapes grown in Cannubi, San Lorenzo and Via Nuova. He likened the importance of a wine’s origin to the relationship between pasture and the milk produced by grazing cows. He was the last winemaker in the family to crush grapes by foot and avoided technical equipment in production.
Luigi Pira, the final heir to the winemaking dynasty, died in 1980. His sisters, the remaining heirs, were unable to continue the work he had overseen for decades. The Boschis family acquired the company in 1981 and updated its winemaking methods.
