Storia
Family origins in a border region
The Keber family has lived for several generations in the border area where the estate's vineyards are located, an area where national identity has shifted repeatedly. Edi Keber's grandfather was born in Medana under Austrian rule, and his father was also born in Medana, but under Italian rule. Edi Keber himself was born in Cormons and married a woman from Medana, which by then had become part of Slovenia. The area belongs today to the Italian administrative region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia.
From single varieties to a single blend
For many years, Edi Keber specialized in wines made from Tocai Friulano. In 2007, Edi and his son Cristian decided to stop producing a range of good wines and instead focus on making a single, exceptional white wine from several grape varieties. This became the wine they call the "Grand Cru from Collio."
The current generation
In recent years, the estate has been led by Cristian and Veronika, the younger generation of the Keber family. They grew up in Italy but consider themselves citizens of Europe.
Terroir
The estate's vineyards lie in a border area in the Collio wine region, in the administrative region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia in northeastern Italy, near Medana and Cormons.
Vinificazione
In the 1970s, a new winemaking method involving stainless steel tanks caused Collio's single-variety white wines to lose much of their individual character; in response, winemakers in the region increasingly turned to blending several grape varieties, a style that had already appeared in some producers' top bottlings. For many years Edi Keber specialized in single-variety wines made from Tocai Friulano. In 2007, Edi and his son Cristian stopped making a range of wines and focused instead on a single, exceptional white wine blended from several grape varieties, resulting in what they describe as a full and complex wine that clearly reflects its terroir, which they call the "Grand Cru from Collio."
Filosofia
The Keber family describes their focus as producing a single, exceptional white wine from several grape varieties that clearly reflects its terroir, referring to it as the "Grand Cru from Collio." Cristian and Veronika, though they grew up in Italy, consider themselves citizens of Europe, reflecting the family's history in a border area where national identity has long been relative.
