Vineyard and terroir

The five varieties originate in Abruzzo and Puglia. Montepulciano and Sangiovese are grown in the Abruzzo hills at 300 m above sea level, while the other varieties come from southern Puglia. The cross-regional origin accounts for the Vino da Tavola classification.

Grapes

A selection of Montepulciano, Sangiovese, Primitivo, Negroamaro and Malvasia Nera. Blend percentages are not specified.

Vinification

The grapes are pressed and destemmed before a 25-day period of maceration and fermentation. Malolactic fermentation takes place in new barriques, divided between 60% American oak and 40% French oak. The component varieties are kept separate through maturation and assembled shortly before bottling.

Ageing

Twelve months in oak, using 60% American and 40% French wood.

Tasting profile

Very deep garnet red. The intense, persistent bouquet combines cherry and blackcurrant with herbs, cinnamon, cloves, cocoa, liquorice and a mineral nuance. The palate is powerfully structured, balancing alcohol with freshness and velvety tannins. The finish is notably long and persistent.

Serving and pairing

Serve at 18°C with charcuterie, meatballs in tomato sauce, grilled meat or substantial oven-baked fish. It may be enjoyed on release or cellared for an extended period.

Label / history

Created as an expression of southern Italy by Valentino Sciotti.
