Vineyard and terroir
Fattoria Zerbina's vineyards cover 28 hectares on the low, varied hills of the Tuscan-Romagnol Apennines, around Marzeno. The varied soils of the surrounding hills proved especially well suited to Sangiovese, giving wines of distinctly local character. The estate also grows Trebbiano, Albano, Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay and Sauvignon; Sangiovese makes up 80% of plantings.
The ancient alberello training method was introduced in 1990. The vines are tied to tall stakes in a special way so that sunlight reaches the whole vine, which supports photosynthesis and makes the vines easier to tend and the grapes easier to harvest. The estate plans to convert all its vineyards to this system.
Grapes
Cristina Geminiani studied Sangiovese clones from Tuscany and Romagna and chose the local Sangiovese di Romagna clone.
Vinification
Fermentation takes place in steel vats, followed by maceration for 10–12 days.
Ageing
The wine ages for 6 months in stainless-steel vats. It can continue to develop in bottle for 5–6 years.
Tasting profile
Elegant and understated, with a rich aroma and a delicate, refreshing berry flavour. The texture is soft, with velvety tannins.
Label / history
Fattoria Zerbina was founded in 1966 by Vincenzo Geminiani, who planted the first vineyards on the hills of Marzeno. In 1987 management passed to his granddaughter, Cristina (Maria Cristina) Geminiani, who trained in oenology and agriculture and graduated from the University of Milan. The oenologist Vittorio Fiore assisted her in the early years. She founded "Invitation to Romagna", a public organisation that brings together leading producers of Emilia-Romagna. The winery is described as state-of-the-art.
