Vineyard and terroir

The grapes come from Niscemi and the Piano Spineto vineyards, a plateau in the highest part of the estate at 270 m a.s.l. Syrah is associated here with sandy soils. The vines are Guyot trained, with a stated density of 5,900 plants/ha and a yield of 70 q/ha.

Grapes

90% Syrah and 10% Nero d’Avola.

Vinification

The wine is vinified in steel and completes malolactic fermentation.

Ageing

Ageing takes place in 100% new French-oak barriques, followed by six months in bottle. The 2019 technical sheet specifies 12 months in barrique, whereas the wine page gives 18 months.

Technical data

Terre Siciliane IGT. Available in 0.75 L bottles.

Tasting profile

Intense ruby red. The bouquet emphasizes Syrah-derived spice, especially black pepper and cinnamon. The palate brings fresh, crunchy blackberry, blueberry, redcurrant and cassis fruit, with substantial structure, elegance and a soft, silky tannic texture. It can be enjoyed young but can also develop for several years in bottle.

Serving and pairing

Suitable for first courses from simple to elaborate, as well as roasted, braised and stewed meats.

Vintage notes

The 2019 growing season was regular through winter. Spring arrived slightly late, with April temperatures below the seasonal average. A fairly hot summer, careful vineyard management and marked day–night temperature differences produced grapes with strong aromatic potential. Harvest took place in the second half of August during the cooler morning hours.

Label / history

The label’s Moor image derives from a sculpture by the Caltagirone ceramic artist Giacomo Alessi. The first vintage was 2019.
