Vineyard and terroir
The Sangiovese comes from Fontodi’s own vineyards in the Conca d’Oro valley, south of Panzano. The estate has 67 ha of vineyards, all at 380–400 m above sea level. The soils are predominantly calcareous clay, with good drainage that allows the roots to grow deeply. The vineyards are farmed biologically and without chemical fertilisers.
Vinification
Fontodi combines traditional winemaking methods with modern technology. Its gravity-flow cellar, completed in 1998, moves wine between vessels without pumps by arranging the equipment on different levels. The estate is advised by oenologist Franco Bernabei.
Ageing
The wine matures for 12 months in French oak barrels.
Label / history
The name “Fontodi” derives from the Latin “Fons-odi”, meaning “a place with an abundance of water”. Grapes have been grown on the estate since Roman times. Documents from the 16th century record winemaking with specialised equipment at the “Case Via” farm. The Manetti family, historically producers of Tuscan terracotta and other clay goods, bought the Panzano estate in 1968. The family completed one of Tuscany’s first gravity-flow cellars in 1998.
