Vineyard and terroir

The organic fruit comes from a single plot in Panzano. Cold nights produce marked day-to-night temperature shifts. Fontodi’s 67 ha of vineyards lie in the Conca d’Oro valley, south of Panzano, at 380–400 m above sea level. The soils are predominantly limestone-rich clay, with good drainage that allows the roots to grow deeply. The estate practises biological viticulture without chemical fertilisers.

Ageing

The wine rests for 12 months entirely in clay amphorae, known in Tuscany as orci. They are kept in a cellar with a natural ambient temperature of 14 °C and 80% humidity, allowing slow development.

Tasting profile

Aromatic and layered, with abundant freshness and energy. The 2022 is more restrained and delicate than usual.

Vintage notes

The 2022 growing year was challenging.

Label / history

The wine is named after Dino Manetti, father of Giovanni Manetti, who began a new era for the family and the Fontodi estate. The estate’s name derives from the Latin Fons-odi, meaning “a place with an abundance of water.” Grapes have been grown on the property since Roman times, while documents from the 16th century record winemaking with specialised equipment at the “Case Via” farm. After several centuries producing Tuscan terracotta and other clay wares, the Manetti family bought the Panzano estate in 1968. In 1998, Fontodi completed one of Tuscany’s first gravity-flow cellars, arranging equipment on different levels so wine could move between vessels without pumps. The estate is advised by oenologist Franco Bernabei.
