Vineyard and terroir
The two-hectare Bertinga vineyard lies near the village of Lecchi in Chianti and has a southern exposure. Grapes also come from Argenina, while rows of Cabernet Sauvignon occupy parts of the Bertinga and Monti vineyards. The stated soils are tuffaceous sandstone, limestone and clay. The vines are 15–30 years old and trained to spurred cordon with no more than four buds. Yield is 50 quintals per hectare.
Grapes
Blend proportions vary: 60–70% Cabernet Sauvignon and up to 40% Merlot. The Merlot comes from the Argenina vineyard and has been included since the 2008 vintage. Grapes are selected and picked by hand.
Ageing
Bertinga matures for 18 months in Allier oak barriques, described in the summary data as used barriques. It then rests in bottle for at least six months before release.
Technical data
Production ranges from 1,000 to 3,000 bottles.
Vintage notes
Beginning with the 2008 vintage, the Cabernet Sauvignon was supplemented with as much as 40% Merlot harvested from Argenina.
