Vineyard and terroir
The Chardonnay comes from Monteforte d’Alpone and San Bonifacio. The estate's 3 hectares of vineyards lie 50–150 metres above sea level, facing south-west, on basaltic and alluvial soils. The grapes are harvested by hand.
Vinification
The grapes are destemmed and processed with a "non-reductive" approach, with no added SO2. This lets the local microflora develop and shape the character of the must, and 1 to 3 hours of maceration encourage the process. After 24 hours of static settling, the must undergoes alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel tanks at a controlled 16–18 °C.
Ageing
The wine is aged on its fine lees before bottling.
Label / history
The label concept was created by Nicholas Wood, an English architect and artist and a longtime friend of Stefano Inama. The reproduction labels are designed to evoke the seventeenth century, when winemaking flourished in Veneto. The Chardonnay label features an optical study from Denis Diderot's "Encyclopedia, or a Systematic Dictionary of the Sciences, Arts, and Crafts", an eighteenth-century work that was a comprehensive collection of the knowledge of its time and the first successful example of an encyclopedia. The design was inspired by "The Draughtsman's Contract", a film by British director Peter Greenaway that explores the relationship between reality and illusion through an eighteenth-century lens.
