Vineyard and terroir

The grapes come from Tenuta La Solatìa near Monteriggioni, close to Siena. The vineyards lie at 190–250 m above sea level on loam-silt-clay soil that is low in stones and has good water-retention capacity.

Grapes

Latest published vintage (2024): 95% Sangiovese and 5% Alicante Bouschet.

Vinification

After harvest, the grapes are destemmed and crushed before fermentation in stainless-steel vats.

Ageing

The wine matures for four to five months in ceramic amphoras, followed by two months in concrete vats. The high-fired amphoras combine very low oxygen permeability with strong thermal insulation, contributing greater complexity to the wine’s texture and character.

Tasting profile

Intense ruby red. Fresh cherry fruit is accompanied by subtle spicy and floral notes characteristic of Alicante Bouschet. The palate is full-bodied and savoury, with velvety tannins, breadth and a persistent finish. Freshness and lightness support an approachable, easy-drinking style.

Serving and pairing

Serve at 16–18 °C with traditional Italian meat dishes.

Vintage notes

The 2024 growing season featured a wet, rainy spring that demanded continuous attention to vineyard health. July and August were very hot, although thunderstorms and lower temperatures helped moderate the conditions.

Label / history

Chianti Superiore DOCG combines the Chianti DOCG production area with more restrictive production requirements. This estate-grown expression introduces a short period of amphora maturation while retaining its traditional Tuscan identity. Tenuta La Solatìa was submerged beneath the sea in ancient times, and the resulting presence of fossils is represented on the label.
