Vineyard and terroir
The vineyards lie on the moderately warm hills of Panicale, near Lake Trasimeno in Umbria, with a marked difference between day and night temperatures. Cool nights help preserve acidity and fresh aromas, while sunny days encourage the grapes to develop aromatic and phenolic compounds. The estate's soils are clay-limestone, and the climate is mild, with warm summers and cool nights, so the grapes ripen slowly. Vines are planted at around 5,500 per hectare, limiting yields to about 1.5 kg per vine.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested by hand and macerated on their skins for 15 days to extract colour and tannins. Malolactic fermentation takes place in French oak tonneaux.
Ageing
The wine spends around 5–6 months in French oak tonneaux, which softens the sharper edges of the tannins and adds delicate, complex notes of spice and vanilla. A further 4 months in bottle lets the aromas come together.
Tasting profile
Serious yet harmonious and poised. Balanced acidity, a rich aromatic profile with spice and vanilla notes, a firm structure from concentrated fruit, and a long finish.
Label / history
The name comes from the peak that rises above the vineyards, itself named after the Greek goddess Hera, wife of Zeus, and a symbol of fertility. Ferruccio Lamborghini founded the winery in the 1960s, after leaving the automotive business to return to his agricultural roots. The La Fiorita estate lies on the border between Umbria and Tuscany, between the southern shore of Lake Trasimeno and the medieval town of Panicale. It covers around 100 hectares, 32 of them vineyards. Ferruccio's daughter, Patrizia Lamborghini, has managed the estate since the 1990s, and the winery works with oenologist Riccardo Cotarella.
