Vineyard and terroir
Camalaione comes from a dedicated organically farmed vineyard at Le Cinciole, planted at 9,000 vines/ha. The site is at 470 m with a south-eastern exposure. Its soils are clay-limestone galestro schist over Pietraforte sandstone.
Grapes
70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Syrah and 15% Merlot.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested by hand and carefully selected. Spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts takes place in 750 L terracotta amphorae, accompanied by repeated manual punch-downs.
Ageing
After racking, the wine completes malolactic fermentation on the lees in French-oak barriques, with frequent bâtonnage. It remains in the same barriques for approximately 24 months, then spends 12 months in cement tanks and another 12 months in bottle.
Technical data
The Italian page reports an average production of 4,000 bottles, whereas the English page gives 5,000. Formats are 750 ml, 1,500 ml and 3,000 ml.
Label / history
The wine originated from the belief that, in a particularly suitable growing area, the character of the place can prevail over grape variety. International varieties were introduced to the estate in 2000, leading to Camalaione as an expression of Panzano through non-native grapes.
