Vineyard and terroir
Petresco is made exclusively from Sangiovese grown in the single Sottobosco vineyard, an upper-slope site at approximately 470–480 m. The vineyard faces south-east and is farmed organically. Its soils are clay-limestone galestro schist over Pietraforte sandstone.
Grapes
100% Sangiovese, selected from the estate’s best-positioned vineyard. Petresco is one of Le Cinciole’s two historic wines and has been produced since the early 1990s.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested by hand and carefully selected. Following destemming and gentle crushing, they undergo a long, slow maceration and spontaneous indigenous-yeast fermentation in cement vats.
Ageing
The wine matures for 24 months, partly in a 25 hl French-oak cask and partly in second-use French-oak barriques. It then spends another year in cement vats before bottling, followed by 12 months in bottle.
Technical data
Average production is 5,000 bottles. Formats comprise 750 ml, 1,500 ml and 3,000 ml.
Tasting profile
Petresco is conceived as the concentrated expression of the Le Cinciole estate. Its élevage balances wood and wine while allowing the complexity associated with extended bottle maturation to emerge.
