Vineyard and terroir

The vineyards occupy a southeast-facing hillside at 450 metres above sea level in Panzano in Chianti. The soils contain limestone, sand, volcanic stone, schist, and clay. Cultivation is certified organic, with cordone speronato training. The 2016 technical sheet records 8.81 hectares of estate vineyards, of which 5.87 hectares are DOCG.

Grapes

Blend proportions vary by vintage. Latest published vintage (2016): 90% Sangiovese, 5% Merlot, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon.

Vinification

In 2016, Merlot was harvested on 26–28 September, Sangiovese between 29 September and 5 October, and Cabernet Sauvignon on 6–7 October. Fermentation was slow at 28–29°C, with daily pump-overs. Pressing took place at the end of October, after which malolactic fermentation was completed.

Ageing

For 2016, maturation lasted 18–22 months, principally in used 225-litre French-oak barriques with a smaller portion in 400- to 500-litre tonneaux. The technical-sheet summary describes 22 months in French tonneaux. Bottle refinement lasted nine months; the general description gives a range of six to nine months before release.

Technical data

The 2016 vintage has 14.5% alcohol and 6.2 g/L total acidity. Production comprised 5,500 bottles of 750 ml and 120 Magnums.

Tasting profile

An elegant, refined, Sangiovese-led Riserva whose extended maturation adds body, structure, and longevity. Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon complete the blend.

Serving and pairing

Suited to festive meals, steak, grilled meat, and traditional Tuscan dishes.

Vintage notes

The 2016 season began with a very mild winter and warm spring. May and June were wet and cold, but a long, warm summer allowed excellent ripening and an unusually early start to the harvest in late September.

Label / history

The 2013 vintage received Two Red Glasses in the 2018 Gambero Rosso guide.
