Vineyard and terroir
The vineyards lie a short distance east of Taranto on the Salento peninsula, rooted in red clay soil. Breezes from the Ionian Sea help the grapes develop delicate flavours and contribute freshness and persistence to the palate.
Grapes
100% Primitivo.
Vinification
The grapes are destemmed and crushed. Maceration lasts 8–10 days at controlled temperature, with regular pump-overs. After racking, malolactic fermentation takes place in stainless-steel tanks.
Ageing
The wine is refined for 4–5 months in used American and French oak barriques.
Technical data
The Primitivo grapes are harvested at the end of August.
Tasting profile
Intense ruby red with violet reflections. The complex bouquet is rich in red-fruit aromas. Full-bodied, soft, harmonious and moderately tannic, the wine is ready to drink.
Serving and pairing
Serve at 16–18°C. Pair with savoury cured meats, grilled red meat, game, smoked cheeses and cheeses flavoured with herbs. Strongly flavoured seafood can also work, including swordfish with rosemary.
Label / history
The variety's name is associated with early ripening: Primitivo derives from the Latin “primativus,” meaning early ripening. The end-of-August harvest reflects that characteristic.
Awards
Luca Maroni awarded 95 points in 2021. The wine received a Silver Medal at Mundus Vini 2022 and a Gold Medal at the Berliner Wine Trophy 2022.
