Vineyard and terroir
The Negroamaro comes from Masseria Maìme in Upper Salento, near San Pietro Vernotico in the province of Brindisi. The coastal property forms a broad landscape of vineyards between woodland and pine forest, extending towards the sea.
Grapes
100% Negroamaro.
Vinification
After gentle crushing, the grapes are transferred to stainless-steel tanks for alcoholic fermentation at 26–28 °C. Maceration lasts 15–18 days and is managed with gentle pump-overs and délestage to achieve gradual, balanced extraction.
Ageing
For the 2023 wine, ageing lasts approximately 11 months, with 70% in 500-litre tonneaux and 30% in French-oak barriques. The main wine page additionally specifies 15 months of bottle maturation.
Technical data
Negroamaro IGT Salento. Vintage 2023. Alcohol: 13.5% vol. Bottle size: 750 ml.
Tasting profile
Ruby red. The complex nose opens with sour cherry and blackberry, joined by dried rose and a restrained spicy finish of liquorice, black tea and clove. The palate begins softly, supported by elegant tannins and a balanced finish.
Serving and pairing
Pair with red meat, grilled meat or game. The Italian shop recommends 16–18 °C, while the English shop gives 18–20 °C.
Vintage notes
The 2023 winter and spring were generally mild and rainy, delaying the vegetative cycle; flowering occurred around ten days later than usual. Summer was mainly dry. Sunny, dry conditions and good day-to-night temperature variation in August and September favoured a late harvest, floral expression and more moderate alcohol. The grapes were picked on 12 and 13 October, roughly two weeks behind the historical average.
