Vineyard and terroir
For the 2009 vintage, the fruit came from Mirabella and Montemarano. The Mirabella vineyards are situated at 300–400 metres above sea level on mineral-rich volcanic soils. The Montemarano plots are higher and have clay soils. Their grapes ripen late, contributing acidity and tannic structure. Although Montemarano fruit is usually reserved for reserve wines, some was included in the regular 2009 wine.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested entirely by hand from late October to early November. They are gently pressed and undergo a long maceration. Fermentation takes place in stainless-steel tanks at temperatures no higher than 25 °C, followed by malolactic fermentation.
Ageing
The wine matures in French or Slavonian oak barrels for 12–18 months, followed by a further year in bottle before release.
Tasting profile
Elegant and powerful, with acidity and tannic structure suited to extended ageing.
Label / history
First released in 1986, Radici is produced in limited quantities. Its name means “roots” in Italian. The label depicts the family’s historic estate, destroyed in the 1980 earthquake.
