Questo vino
Vineyard and terroir
The wine assembles selected Greco fruit from the family estates of Montefusco, Tufo and Petruro Irpino. The hill-to-mountain microclimate enhances acidity, freshness, verticality and elegance. Soil descriptions differ between the published profiles. The product page describes clay-loam soils formed from sandstone and marl with significant limestone. The current brochure identifies medium-textured volcanic soil at Montefusco, calcareous clay containing sulphur at Tufo, and compact clay at Petruro Irpino. Average planting density is 4,000 vines/ha, with yields of approximately 70 q/ha or 1.8 kg/vine. Average vine age is given as 20 years on the page and 25 years in the current brochure.
Grapes
100% Greco.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested manually in mid-October. Classic white vinification takes place in stainless steel at 16–18°C. A small component ferments in used barriques. Particular attention is paid to malolactic fermentation, which contributes density and consistency.
Ageing
Published maturation details differ. The product page gives approximately 18 months on full fermentation lees, with about 7% of the wine fermented and matured in used barriques for 12 months, followed by at least 18 months in bottle. The current brochure gives approximately 24 months on the lees, with a small portion fermented and matured in second-use barriques for 24 months, followed by approximately 24 months in bottle.
Tasting profile
Pale straw yellow with green reflections. The aromatic profile combines ripe fruit, lychee and grapefruit with yellow flowers, dried fruit, figs, herbs, wet stone, oyster, briny and limestone-like notes, and pronounced smoky nuances. The palate is firm yet agile, with marked salinity and surprising freshness. It closes with a fine, long persistence.
Serving and pairing
Serve at 14–15°C. Pair with fish or legume soups, shellfish, smoked salmon and cheese; seafood pasta and risotto, including preparations with legumes and vegetables; white meats, fried fish or vegetables, and fresh or soft cheeses. Cellaring potential is 20 years or more.
Label / history
The style recalls the great white wines of Irpinia from the 1970s and 1980s while emphasizing modern organoleptic richness. The wine has carried the Riserva designation since the 2018 vintage, following revisions to the Greco di Tufo DOCG production rules that recognized its extended maturation.
