Vineyard and terroir
Costemonghisio is made from vineyards in Vinchio, in the Asti district and the heart of the Nizza DOCG area. The technical sheet places them at approximately 280 m with a southeast exposure, while the main description characterizes the exposure as south-facing. Yellowish sandy deposits contain marine fossils; the soil also has substantial silt and veins of clay. Rigorous crop thinning contributes to the wine’s concentration.
Grapes
100% Barbera.
Vinification
Green harvesting is carried out in summer. The grapes are picked by hand from mid- to late September into perforated 25 kg crates, followed by further manual sorting on vibrating tables and gentle pressing. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks with automated daily pump-overs and punch-downs. Maceration lasts 8–10 days.
Ageing
The technical data specify at least 12 months in tonneaux followed by six months in bottle before release. The main presentation instead describes 18 months in French-oak barrels.
Technical data
Alcohol: 15%.
Tasting profile
Intense ruby red. The nose is broad and concentrated, led by red fruit and cherry; the broader description adds plum, red berries and sweet spices. Structured and powerful on the palate, with lively acidity providing freshness while the texture remains soft and rounded. The main description also characterizes the style as austere.
