Vineyard and terroir

Ghè comes from the Cerretta area of Serralunga d’Alba. Its historically named, monopole vineyard occupies a fully south-facing spur at 380 m. A special michet clone produces small berries whose skins have a higher concentration of polyphenols, contributing complexity and structure. The soil is calcareous and sandy, with clay and iron.

Grapes

100% Nebbiolo. Ghè is made only in exceptional vintages.

Vinification

After summer green harvesting, the grapes are manually picked in October into perforated 25 kg crates. Further hand selection on vibrating tables precedes gentle pressing. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks with automated daily pump-overs and punch-downs. Maceration lasts 12–16 days.

Ageing

After malolactic fermentation, the wine matures for about 30 months in 400 L French-oak barrels. The main presentation and English technical text specify at least another 30 months in bottle before release as Riserva. The Italian technical text instead gives 24–30 months in bottle and release after five total years.

Technical data

Alcohol is given as 14.5% in the English technical text and 14.5–15% in the Italian text. Production is limited to approximately 800–1,000 bottles, packed in wooden cases.

Tasting profile

Intense ruby red. The complex nose combines spice, leather and tobacco with delicate rose and violet scents. The palate is dry, powerful and persistent, with pronounced tannins; the Italian tasting text additionally describes a velvety quality.

Serving and pairing

Pair with red meat or aged cheeses.
