Vineyard and terroir
The grapes are grown at Fattoria La Selvanella in the commune of Radda, on hills averaging 400 m in elevation. The vineyard has mainly limestone soils, a south-west exposure and a favourable microclimate.
Grapes
The wine is made entirely from Sangiovese Grosso, also known as Brunello.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested in late October. Traditional vinification includes a 20-day maceration with regular pump-overs, fermentation at a controlled temperature not exceeding 27 °C, and malolactic fermentation.
Ageing
The wine ages for 30 months in French oak barrels. Its bouquet continues to develop with further ageing.
Tasting profile
Rich and elegant, with a warm character and a notably complex aroma.
Label / history
Melini was founded in 1705 in Pontassieve, on the outskirts of Florence. Its wines were sold only in Italy until the mid-nineteenth century. In 1865, Alfredo Laborel Melini developed a woven straw bottle covering that allowed the wines to be transported safely abroad. In 1877, the Florence Chamber of Commerce awarded Melini a diploma and Gold Medal for developing and strengthening international markets for Tuscan wines.
In the early twentieth century, the Melini family expanded the estate by acquiring about 200 hectares of vineyards in the Chianti Classico area and building a winery in Gaggiano di Poggibonsi, where the company remains. Melini is part of GRUPPO ITALIANO VINI.
