Storia
Foundation (1964–1971)
Moncaro was founded in 1964 by a group of winemakers in Montecarotto, a small town in the heart of Castelli di Jesi. By working together, they aimed to increase production and to bring wider recognition to their home region. Construction of the winery in Montecarotto began in 1970, and the first harvest was gathered in 1971. The name Moncaro, used for both the company and some of its wines, is a shortened form of Montecarotto.
Organic experiments and expansion (1980–2006)
In 1980 the cooperative began experimenting with organic grape growing, in line with CEE directives. In 1995 it acquired the Cantina del Conero winery in Camerano, in the Rosso Conero production area, and changed its name from Moncaro to Terre Cortesi Moncaro. "Terre Cortesi" literally means "different lands". In 1999 it bought a further winery, Acquaviva Picena, in the Rosso Piceno area. A new wine cellar opened in 2006 in Contrada Busche, Montecarotto.
Certifications and research (2016–2021)
In 2016 Terre Cortesi Moncaro joined the register of companies following the code of conduct of the BSCI (Business Social Compliance Initiative), a global benchmark for monitoring and improving social responsibility practices in supply chains. Since 2019 the cooperative has worked with the Polytechnic University of Marche on the Vitinnova project, which aims to improve organic grape-growing methods, for example by using chitosan instead of copper to reduce environmental impact. In 2021 the company received Equalitas certification.
