Storia
Montemajor was created out of a wish to offer a distinctive interpretation of southern Italy, and more broadly the whole Mediterranean, through its history, traditions and land.
The winery belongs to winemaker Mario Ercolino and his wife, Roberta Pirone. Over the years the couple have acquired several selected vineyards in southern Italy, with old vines. Mario learned winemaking from his parents while working with them at their Feudi di San Gregorio estate, which helped put Campania on the world wine map.
Terroir
The winery is named after Monte Maggiore, a 261-metre hill near the left bank of the Ofanto River, on the border between Apulia and Basilicata. It stands in an isolated area, far from towns and close to ancient sheep tracks used for centuries to move herds between pastures.
Filosofia
The winery describes its aim as offering a distinctive interpretation of southern Italy, and more broadly the whole Mediterranean, through its history, traditions and land.
