Questo vino
Vineyard and terroir
The grapes come from estate parcels in Maremma, Tuscany. The vineyards have clay-and-limestone soils with eroded stones, a density of 7,575 vines per hectare and north–south-oriented rows. Yield in 2021 was 35 hl/ha. Picking was performed by hand, with timing adapted to individual sections of each parcel.
Grapes
The 2021 blend is 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Cabernet Franc, 20% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot. It shares its four-variety composition with Monteverro while expressing a distinct balance of structure and intensity.
Vinification
Each lot was fermented separately in stainless-steel tanks and barrels. Fermentation was natural, cellar movements relied entirely on gravity, and punch-downs were performed manually. The wine was bottled without fining and with light filtration.
Ageing
The detailed 2021 vinification information gives 20 months in French oak barrels, with 50% new oak. The general introductory description instead refers to 18 months in French oak.
Technical data
IGT Toscana Rosso. The 2021 yield was 35 hl/ha.
Tasting profile
Deep, dark garnet in color with royal-red and ruby nuances. The nose combines rosemary and thyme with iodine, blackberry, blackcurrant, roast beef, tulip and liquorice. Dense and velvety on entry, the palate develops a structured tannic frame, with lingering cherry and cassis accompanied by spice, blackcurrant and eucalyptus.
Vintage notes
Frost spread across Tuscany during the night of 7–8 April 2021, with temperatures reaching −1.5°C in parts of the vineyard. Burning straw bales, the estate’s coastal position, late pruning and delayed cane bending helped keep damage low. A dry but cooler-than-average spring followed, and June and July remained relatively moderate. Warm August weather accelerated maturation. Merlot was harvested at the end of August to retain fresh aromatics; the Cabernet varieties and Petit Verdot were picked from 10 to 24 September.
Label / history
Although it shares Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot with the flagship Monteverro, Terra di Monteverro is presented as more than a conventional second wine, with its own harmonious combination of structure, intensity and regional character.
