Questo vino
Vineyard and terroir
The fruit comes from the Monteverro estate in Maremma, Tuscany. The vineyards have clay-and-limestone soils containing eroded stones and are planted at 7,575 vines per hectare, with rows running north–south. Harvesting is performed by hand.
Grapes
The 2022 blend comprises 40% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Syrah. Conceived as part of the same family as Monteverro and Terra di Monteverro, Verruzzo combines the structure of Cabernet Sauvignon, the aromatic character of Cabernet Franc, the strength of Syrah and the softness of Merlot. Its name means “small wild boar.”
Vinification
Natural fermentation takes place in stainless-steel tanks, and all movements through the winery rely on gravity. The wine is bottled without fining and receives light filtration.
Ageing
The wine matures for 12 months in French oak barrels.
Tasting profile
The colour is cherry red, with purple and pink accents at the rim. Grenadine and cassis lead the nose, followed by cherry and tomato-stem nuances. The palate opens with freshness and develops into a framed, structured texture, showing red cherry, raspberry, bay leaf and lilac. Rounded yet firm tannins carry the wine into a fresh, vibrant and balanced finish.
Vintage notes
The 2022 growing season was hot and dry, with rainfall well below normal. Two important rain events—one shortly before budbreak and another just before flowering—gave the vines enough energy and water reserves to withstand the summer drought without excessive vegetative growth. Mid-July was particularly hot, but resilient vines and biologically active soils allowed the grapes to ripen safely. Merlot and Syrah matured slightly earlier than usual. One-third of the Cabernet crop was picked before rain and cooler temperatures arrived on 3 September; the remaining Cabernet was harvested between 10 and 20 September.
