Vineyard and terroir

The grapes come from vineyards northeast of Verona, on the hill separating Montorio from Valle d’Illasi. The estate describes 20 hectares trained to Guyot and 5 hectares under the traditional Pergola Veronese system. Plantings date from 1995 to 2022. Il Perlar and Palazzina have limestone soils dominated by iron-rich red clay, while Monte del Drago has medium-textured tuffaceous clay. Planting density is 6,000 vines/ha under Guyot and 4,500 vines/ha under Pergola Veronese. Yield is 0.5–1 kg per vine.

Grapes

55% Corvina, 20% Corvinone, 15% Oseleta and 10% Rondinella.

Vinification

Only selected grapes from suitable vintages are used. Following the harvest from 3 to 29 September, the fruit dries for 150 days. It is then gently crushed and fermented in open tonneaux for approximately two months, followed by gentle pressing.

Ageing

The wine matures in new tonneaux for at least two years and receives a further year of bottle ageing before release.

Technical data

Alcohol: 15.68% vol. Total acidity: 8.10 g/L. pH: 3.48. Residual sugar: 87 g/L.

Vintage notes

The 2018 season was broadly regular in rainfall and temperature, although summer continued the dry, hot pattern of the preceding four years. A very wet May did not impede vine or fruit development. After the previous small crop, fruit was abundant, and limited rainfall sustained the vineyards until heavy precipitation at the beginning of September accelerated ripening and the harvest schedule. The picking team was enlarged for the first time so that grapes could be harvested at optimal maturity. The resulting production balance and vineyard condition made 2018 an excellent year.
