Vineyard and terroir
Le Serre Nuove dell’Ornellaia is the estate’s second wine, made from the same varieties and under the same growing conditions and winemaking philosophy as Ornellaia. Each grape variety and estate parcel was vinified separately for the 2024 vintage.
Grapes
Blend proportions vary by vintage. Latest published vintage (2024): 49% Merlot, 21% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Petit Verdot and 13% Cabernet Franc.
Vinification
The grapes were harvested by hand into 15 kg crates. The bunches and berries underwent manual selection on a double sorting table before and after destemming, followed by optical sorting and gentle pressing. Alcoholic fermentation was conducted partly in stainless-steel tanks and partly in concrete tanks at a controlled 22–26°C for approximately 10 days. Maceration continued for 10–15 days. Malolactic fermentation took place partly in stainless steel and partly in barriques.
Ageing
The wine matured for approximately 15 months in barriques, comprising 30% new oak and 70% second- and third-use barrels. After the first 8 months, the final blend was assembled and returned to barriques for a further 7 months. Six months of bottle maturation preceded release.
Technical data
Alcohol: 14% vol.
Tasting profile
The 2024 has a deep, intense colour with youthful purple highlights. Its generous, expressive nose opens with red fruit, particularly raspberry and redcurrant, complemented by restrained floral and spice nuances. The palate is crisp and vibrantly fresh, balanced and dynamic, with notable density and elegant tannins. Its persistent finish carries a continuing echo of fruit, while the wine remains approachable and reflects the bright, fresh nature of the vintage.
Vintage notes
The 2024 growing season began early after mild, rainy conditions supplied the vineyards with ample water. Continued rainfall supported vine development while making vineyard management demanding. Warm, sunny weather from late June slowed vegetative growth around véraison at the end of July, favouring concentration and aromatic development. Localised storms in mid-August brought differing amounts of rain across the vineyards and helped the grapes complete ripening. From early September, alternating sunny, cool and occasionally rainy days maintained berry health while balancing concentration. The resulting vintage is characterised by freshness, balance and aromatic intensity.
