Vineyard and terroir

Ornus dell’Ornellaia is produced from late-harvested Petit Manseng grown in a tiny vineyard. Bolgheri’s mild, breezy autumn conditions provide the setting for the estate’s exploration of dessert-wine production.

Grapes

100% Petit Manseng.

Vinification

Each lot was pressed and fermented separately. Lengthy, gentle pressing was followed by natural settling overnight. Fermentation took place in entirely new oak barriques at temperatures no higher than 22°C. It was arrested after the desired sugar and alcohol levels had been achieved. Malolactic fermentation was prevented.

Ageing

After racking, the wines matured for 12 months. The individual lots were then blended, bottled and held for another year before release.

Technical data

Toscana IGT Bianco — Vendemmia Tardiva. Alcohol: 14% vol. Residual sugar: 130 g/L.

Tasting profile

The 2022 has a golden colour. Acacia honey, peach, quince jam and caramel form its complex aromatic profile. The palate is creamy and opulent, balancing acidity and sweetness before a savoury finish. Distinctive freshness carries through to the close.

Vintage notes

Winter 2022 remained close to seasonal temperature averages, while early spring was cool and dry, delaying budbreak. From May, approximately 75 rainless days caused pronounced water stress through growth, flowering and veraison and contributed to low yields. Summer storms restored vine activity and allowed ripening to resume. Clear September weather and cool nights favoured the accumulation of sugars, aromas and tannins. Harvest conditions permitted the picking date to be tailored to each vineyard and variety.

Label / history

The name derives from Fraxinus ornus, the Latin name of the Orniello, an ancient Mediterranean plant that also gave Ornellaia its name.
