Vineyard and terroir
The vineyards cover 97 ha near Bolgheri on the Tuscan coast and have been cultivated since 1981. They occupy a coastal valley with a mild Mediterranean climate and soils that allow the grapes to ripen. Fruit from each plot is handled separately to preserve its individual expression.
Vinification
Grapes from each individual plot are fermented separately.
Label / history
The 2009 edition was named “L’Equilibrio,” Catalan for “Balance,” in reference to the vintage’s balance and harmony. Its label was created by Chinese sculptor and painter Zhang Huan, whose design drew on Confucian teachings about moderation and balance between humanity and nature.
Ornellaia launched the long-term “Vendemmia d’Artista” project in 2006. For each vintage, the technical team selects a word expressing its defining quality, and an internationally recognized artist creates a corresponding artwork and label. Wines from the collection are sold at auction to support charities involved in restoring works of art and monuments.
Ornellaia was founded in 1981 by Marchese Lodovico Antinori and is now part of the Marchesi Frescobaldi group.
