Vineyard and terroir

The vineyards lie south of Lake Garda, along the lakeshore, in clay-limestone soils that retain moisture and put the vines under moderate stress, which helps concentrate the flavour of the grapes. The limestone gives the wine its characteristic lightly salty minerality. The mild lakeside climate evens out temperature changes, so the grapes ripen steadily and keep their acidity. The vineyards are planted mainly with Trebbiano.

Grapes

The wine is made from Turbiana, also known as Trebbiano di Lugana, a grape native to the southern shore of Lake Garda. Young, it gives pure, bright citrus notes and can develop more complex nuances with age.

Vinification

The grapes are picked by hand at the end of September, at optimal ripeness with a good balance of sugar and acidity. Pressing is gentle, partly with whole bunches, giving a clean, elegant texture. Fermentation is slow, at 14–18 °C, in stainless-steel tanks, which preserves the delicate aromas and freshness.

Ageing

The wine spends around 5 months on the fine lees, which adds body and creaminess.

Tasting profile

Refined, fresh and expressive, with a citrus and mineral character and an elegant softness. The texture is clean and elegant, with body and creaminess from the lees and a lightly salty minerality.

Serving and pairing

Suited to light Mediterranean dishes.

Label / history

According to legend, the name Ottella dates to the XVI century, as suggested by the coat of arms still kept in the estate courtyard. G. B. Perez, in La provincia di Verona ed I suoi vini (1900), states that in the XVI century the winery was known as the only producer from Verona. The estate is in Peschiera del Garda, on the southern shore of Lake Garda. It is owned by the brothers Ludovico and Francesco Montresor and their father, Michele, who combine local winemaking traditions with modern technology.
